King
Mausolos II, who ruled a city called Halikarnassos, wanted to be remembered forever. At the end of his life, he decided to build a tomb that would be unparalleled in the world. The structure consisted of three parts - a Greek temple with columns supporting a stepped pyramid stood on a massive base that housed a hall containing the king's sarcophagus. For more than ten years, thousands of men - ordinary workers and leading artists - worked on the construction, often without pay, confident that their work would go down in history. The rich sculptural decoration, which depicted lions, Amazons and members of the royal family, was dominated by a majestic quadriga. This sculpture, which represented a chariot drawn by a four-horse team, with Mausolus and his beloved wife Artemisia holding the reins, stood at the very top of the forty-five-metre-high structure. The king did not live to see his monument completed, but his dream came true. The structure, which came to be called the Mausoleum - or "belonging to Mausolus" - became one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and its name became the generic name for any great tomb. It amazed for more than a thousand years, but in the 12th century AD it was destroyed by an earthquake. The destruction was then completed by Christian crusaders who built a castle of Mausoleum stones to defend against the Turks...

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker
Petra Brodská, DiS., presents the mausoleum in Halicarnassus, supplemented with the English inscription MAUSOLEUM AT HALICARNASSUS. The obverse side, which is common to the entire cycle, then presents all Seven Wonders of the World - the Egyptian pyramids, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the statue of Zeus in Olympia, the mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the lighthouse on the island of Faro. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign licence of the island of Niue, they also bear the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II  together with the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2022 on the obverse side.

Ten identical coins are
sealed in special packaging. This is perforated so that it can be conveniently divided into ten parts if required.

Note: The packaging is covered with foil to prevent damage during transport.
