Seven wonders of the ancient world

The sixth issue of the Czech Mint's cycle dedicated to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, commemorates the Colossus of Rhodes. This special product will be especially appreciated by investors. The whole package contains one troy ounce of gold, but divided into ten identical coins. When you want to monetize only part of your investment, you can break the package and sell it in pieces…

The island of Rhodes, off the coast of Asia Minor, was a crossroads of trade routes in ancient times. It connected mainland Greece with Egypt, Cyprus, Syria and Phoenicia, and was a link between East and West. Trade in grain, timber, wool and slaves flourished here. The local maritime law was so sophisticated that it was adopted by the Romans, and some of its principles have been preserved to this day. All this brought the people of Rhodes fabulous wealth, which enabled them to build a statue unlike any the world had ever seen. Over 30 metres high, the Colossus of Rhodes represented the sun god Helios, who was the island's patron saint. The figure, which consisted of an iron skeleton covered in shiny bronze skin, held a burning torch and thus served as a lighthouse. No one knows exactly what the statue looked like or where it stood. Some scholars think it was straddled so that ships would enter Lindos harbour between its legs. Other historians believe that she stood with her feet together on the edge of the city and its face turned towards the harbour. We may never know what it was really like. For just 66 years after its completion, the Wonder of the World collapsed into the sea as a result of an earthquake. Hundreds of years later, fragments of the statue were taken by Muslims who sold them for scrap…

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of the medal maker Petra Brodská, DiS., presents a supposed image of the Colossus of Rhodes, supplemented with the English inscription COLOSSUS OF RHODES. The obverse side, which is common to the entire cycle, presents all seven wonders of the world - the Egyptian pyramids, the hanging gardens of Semiramis, the temple of Artemis in Ephesus, the statue of Zeus in Olympia, the mausoleum in Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the lighthouse on the island of Faro. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign license of the island of Niue, they also bear its national emblem, the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2023 on the obverse side.

Ten identical coins are sealed in special packaging. This is perforated so that it can be conveniently divided into ten parts if necessary.

Note: The packaging is covered with foil to prevent damage during transport.
