Bridges as a symbol of linking

Another coin from the series “Bridges of the Czech Republic“ issued by the Czech National Bank, this time designed by academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů.

The railway bridge in Žampach is one of the highest and oldest railway bridges in central Europe. Its construction began in 1898 and it was built in two years.
The bridge is located on the railway line of the “Sázava Pacific“ which runs along the Sázava river, between the stations Borek-Žampach and Luka pod Medníkem, south of the town of Jílové and 12 km east from the confluence of rivers Sázava and Vltava. The bridge has seven arches with a span of 12.5 metres; it was built from coarse-grained granite. The highest arch towers 41 metres above an abyss called “Tomcat“ and the Studený (Cold) creek. Total length of the bridge is 109 metres.
On the obverse side of the coin three stylized heraldic animals are depicted in the upper part above a bottom view of the bridge and the denomination of the coin 5,000 CZK, name of the series “BRIDGES“ and “Czech Republic“. The reverse side features a front view of the bridge with the legend “2013 – railway bridge in Žampach“. The coin is made of 999.9 fine gold, weighs 15.55 g and measures 28 mm in diameter.
