Product description
Commemorative coins of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 10,000 CZK commemorate the most important state anniversaries. In 2021, the gold coins minted in exceptional quality proof are dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Ludmila.
When Ludmila, the daughter of the pagan Grand Duke of Pšov, married the Přemyslid Prince Bořivoj I, she certainly had no idea that a new stage in the history of Central Europe was beginning to be written. She accepted baptism alongside her husband and brought the new faith to Bohemia, where the Přemyslids ruled. It did not take her long to forget the Slavic gods and, in the spirit of Christianity introduced to her by Methodius himself, she devoted her life to caring for her neighbours. Always a gentle and just woman, she was especially renowned for her kindness and generosity - to the poor, the infirm, widows, orphans, ... The fate of Ludmilla's daughter-in-law, chosen as a wife by her son Vratislav, was initially similar. Drahomíra came from a pagan tribe of the Polabian Slavs and was baptized after her marriage, but Christ did not enter her heart. When Prince Vratislav died, Drahomíra became regent of the land by decision of the tribal assembly, because her sons were not of age. The upbringing of the boys - Wenceslas and Boleslaus - was entrusted by the nobles to their grandmother Ludmila, which affected Drahomíra very much. She differed with her mother-in-law in her political views and was jealous of her popularity with the future Prince Wenceslas and the whole people. In an attempt to rid herself of Ludmilla's influence, Drahomíra hired two assassins who strangled her. Her martyrdom, however, secured Ludmilla's immortality. Václav did not forget the grandmother who raised him and began to build her cult. It was not long before she was declared a saint...
In the art competition of the Czech National Bank, the academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů won. The expert jury was impressed by "the perfectly rendered scene of the strangulation of Princess Ludmila from Velislav's Bible on the cheek and the very good portrait of the princess with a veil and a princely crown on the reverse side".
