Product description

In 1941 the world shook by the greatest conflict of all time, the Second World War. As a commemoration of the moments that left their mark in history, the Czech Mint created a new historical series, titled War Year 1941. Your collections will gradually liven up with the gold Smart coins 5 NZD, with the motives of the Siege of Leningrad, the Battle of Tobruk, the Attack on Pearl Harbor and the Sinking of the Bismarck, which opens the entire miniseries.

Adolf Hitler longed to overrule the Atlantic and to destruct the Allied supply convoys. For this purpose should serve, among other, a super-ship Bismarck. Her victorious campaign did not last long - at the Battle of the Denmark Strait has destroyed the British flag ship, the battlecruiser HMS Hood, and the retaliation immediately became a top priority of the Navy.

Winston Churchill gave this order: “Your mission is to sink the Bismarck. Nothing is more important at this moment. I command you to take all steps to ensure, that this task is accomplished.”

The German super-ship was caught by the British 500 km from the shores of France, where she tried to reach for necessary repairs, and a lucky hit of the British torpedo disabled the rudder of the Bismarck. The war Colossus was totally paralyzed and was left at the mercy of the opponents. From more than two thousand German sailors, only 115 survived. The shipwreck was not discovered until 1989 and the hull of the ship seemed almost surprisingly unscathed. This raised a question, as to which we will probably never know the answer: Did the proud Germans sink their supermachine themselves?

The artistic processing of this and all the other coins in the series come from the workshop of a gifted medalist Asamat Baltaev, DiS. On the reverse side he has portrayed the final moments of the warship Bismarck - under fire of the British Navy and under relentless attacks of the RAF. He has completed the war scene with inscription DER UNTERGANG DER BISMARCK, which means the Destruction of the Bismarck. The obverse side is dedicated to the necessary attributes of the issuer, the nominal 5 DOLLARS and the year of issue of the coin 2016.

The issue is limited to just 200 pieces.
