Product description

The first half of the five-year issue plan of the Czech National Bank and the Castle cycle was closed. The fifth gold coin with a nominal value of CZK 5,000 embossed in the quality standard belongs to Zvíkov Castle.

The dominant feature of the castle is the so-called Tufnitz Tower, also called Markomanka, which differs significantly from the rest of the building. According to some interpretations, its shape suggests that it was built by the ancient Romans, to who served as a forward military post in times of wars with Germanic tribes. A more rational explanation, however, is that the tower was a work of german builders (the massive structure would correspond to the German Gothic style) and the rest of the castle was built by someone else. Another peculiarity of the tower are the mysterious marks on the stone blocks from which it is built. According to some historians, they are the signatures of medieval stonemasons who built a castle in the service of the kings Přemysl Otakar I and Wenceslas I, but other scholars can see old-fashioned runes, the Celtic Ogama alphabet, alchemical symbols, or even a treasure map in the underground castle. According to the legend, the treasure could be the lost Premyslid crown, which served the Czech kings before Charles IV made new crown jewels. Unfortunately, during the construction of the Orlicka dam there was an increase in the water level in the Vltava river and the flooded castle cellar probably will forever remain hidden ... Of course, the Tufnitz Tpwer can not be missed even on a gold coin along with the Písek Gate, the Hlávka tower and the St. Wenceslas Chapel, you can find it on the reverse side. The obverse side presents a perfect rendering of the woodcarving of the altar of Christ's Lamentations Altar, which provided medalmaker Luboš Charvát with the first place in the art contest of the Czech National Bank.

All gold coins of the Czech Republic are created in the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou. A complete collection of ten castles can be stored in an elegant wooden etui.
