The new cycle of the Czech National Bank, which is dedicated to the urban conservation areas of the Czech Republic, presents its second issue. The gold coin with a nominal value of 5000 CZK minted in quality standard commemorates the beauty of Jihlava.

The small village on the banks of the Jihlava river did not initially differ from other medieval market settlements. However, this changed in the middle of the 13th century when rich silver sources were discovered here. The silver rush attracted miners, craftsmen and merchants from all over Europe, and since the village was not sufficient for their needs, a new, majestic town was built on the opposite bank of the river. Great wealth was generated not only from the mining business, but also from the coinage of coins, which led to the colonisation of the surrounding region. The silver treasury of the Bohemian lands gained royal privileges and soon became one of the most powerful cities of our homeland. The wealthy entrepreneurs built expensive stone houses, magnificent churches were built as a thanksgiving to God and all this wealth was protected by massive walls. Although silver was dwindling, mining activities were carried out in Jihlava for 500 years. No wonder that the historic centre of the town was declared a city conservation area in 1982.

The medal maker Luboš Charvát won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. On the reverse side of the coin, there is a collage composed of architectural pearls of the Jihlava Urban Monument Reserve. On the obverse side, he depicted the figure of an angel in the sky from the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola holding the Baroque town emblem. Around the angel, the city fortification is visible, incorporating the heraldic animals of the Czech Republic.
