Kytice is one of the most famous works of Czech literature, and the unique charm of selected poems written by Karel Jaromír Erben became the inspiration for the seven-part series of the Czech Mint. The first gold ducat was dedicated to the poem Kytice.

The collection of poems Kytice was published in 1853 at the beginning of the Bach era - a ten-year period of political persecution and government absolutism. Our writers reacted to the suppression of Czech cultural efforts in various ways - Havlíček with a ridiculous satire, Němcová with an escape to an idyllic childhood, and Erben with a commemoration of Slavic roots. Thus a Bouquet of Czech Folktales was written. The first poem, which gave the name to the entire collection, tells about orphans whose mother died, but it is a patriotic allegory in fact. The author explained why he decided to create a collection - he hoped that, like the children who found the soul of their deceased mother in the flowers of the thyme, the nation would discover the spirit of their homeland in verse legends…
