Product description
Europe celebrates 500 years of church reformation and Protestantism in 2017. The beginning of these events dates back to 1517 and is inherently connected with the character of Martin Luther, to who is devoted the half-ounce gold coin of the Czech Mint.
The young scholar did not belong to theologians who preached water and drank wine. When he found out that his personal experience of faith differs from the official teaching of the Church, he decided not to retain his thoughts himselfs. He wrote 95 critical theses as a challenge to academic discussion and reform of the Church. He responded, for example, to the despicable practice of selling indulgences. He sent his opinions to Bishop Albrecht Brandenburg on October 31, 1517. However, the legend of how he nailed them to the door of the Wittenberg cathedral became much more famous. Whatever the publication of Luther's thoughts was, their response was unprecedented. The theses spread throughout the German Empire and caused a stormy debate. The preacher, who came from poor family, suddenly became the father of the German Reformation and the founder of Protestantism. Although he was declared a heretic, his powerful supporters enabled him to further form and helped him to avoid the fate of other great reformers accused of heresy. Martin Luther could have influenced the minds and lives of millions.
The expert sculptor Zbynek Fojtu became the author of the gold coin. The reverse side of the mintage was dedicated to the portrait of the reformer with a characteristic headgear, surrounded by the name MARTIN LUTHER in the inscription. The obverse side of the coin bears the sculpture of the Wittenberg cathedral entrance portal. The composition of the obverse side is complemented by the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2017, together with the nominal value of 25 DOLLARS (NZD), which means the attributes of Niue Island, a licensor for issuing commemorative coins of the Czech Mint.
Each coin is accompanied by a special illustrated certificate of authenticity.
