Dominik Hašek – our best-known and most successful hockey goaltender - was the first Czech inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The Czech Mint decided to mark this occasion by contributing another medal to Hašek’s collection of medals from precious metals.
The future “Dominator” started playing hockey at the age of six. His undeniable talent helped him become the youngest national team goaltender in the history of Czechoslovakia, multiple national champion and Stanley Cup winner and, most of all, Olympic medalist! Despite countless national and international victories and awards, his most memorable feat is his winning performance in the “Tournament of the Century” – the Olympic hockey tournament held in Nagano, Japan, in 1998. The gold medal was the first ever Olympic title won for the Czech Republic in ice hockey, moreover at a time when the best world players participated in the tournament!
The silver commemorative medal was designed by the prominent academic sculptor Jiří Dostál. He dedicated the obverse side to the goaltender’s portrait rendered in the tiniest details, and the date of the induction of the first Czech hockey player into the Hockey Hall of Fame. On the reverse side we can admire Dominik Hašek in action at the beginning and the top of his career, proving his hockey talent at an early age.
Let’s pay a tribute to the hockey legend! The silver medals may provide a wonderful gift for any sports fan, as well as a valuable addition to a numismatic collection.
