65 years ago two extraordinary narrative talents joined together, an animator Walt Disney and a writer Lewis Carroll and this evolved into a magical cartoon musical Alice in Wonderland, which became the model for the quarter-ounce commemorative coin made of pure gold.

It was the thirteenth full-length animated film by Disney studios, that the whole world loved, which has managed to combine otherwise inseparable enemies - during the World War II it entertained the high command of the Third Reich and in the Cold War it captivated the Soviet Politburo. Although Walt Disney tried already in the thirties, the adaptation of a literary classics did not get on the silver screen until July 26, 1951. Initially, it seemed that thirteen was an unlucky number for the studio - the critique did not like the film and Disney was accused of americanizing the British treasure. He countered, that he wanted to bring the story closer to the public and families, but Alice had no success with them either.

In the '70s it turned out, that the the film was ahead of its time, and a more relaxed society welcomed it with enthusiasm.

Nowadays, this surreal vision is regarded as a cult classic and one of the best adaptations of artwork to date, which was difficult to adapt to film, due to a rich language and its bizarre situations. One of them is Alice's visit to the Mad Hatter, who is stuck in time, and a his bizarre tea party never ends. This iconic scene is captured on the reverse side of the coin, along with the English lettering ALICE in WONDERLAND and 65th Anniversary and the logo of Disney. The obverse is dedicated to the attributes of the issuer, the island of NIUE, which is loosely affiliated to New Zealand: the name and a portrait of Queen Elisabeth II., the nominal value of 25 DOLLARS and the year of issue of the coin 2016. The relief of the coin is a work of a team of New Zealand Mint.
