The medals minted of one kilogram of pure gold, whose relief comes from the masterclasses bank notes created by Oldřich Kulhánek, were for many years the flagship of the Czech Mint. In 2017 this chapter closes since the only paper currency left, from which we can draw inspiration - is a 20 banknote with a portrait of Ottokar I.

Although the validity of banknotes with a nominal value of CZK 20 ended in 2008, surely you remember the majestic portrait of the legendary Czech king. This legal tender appeared on April 20th 1994 for the first time, and two years later was to upgrade its image. The smallest banknote was very popular among people - in 1997 there was a barely believable 46 633 000 pieces in circulation. Why it was withdrawn from the circulation then? It was her popularity - a rapid circulation led to a rapid wear and maximum life of the banknote was 1.5 years. The continual printing of new banknotes is costly, and it was decided that their role will be fully represented by coins of the same denomination. The manufacturer of these coins, thus the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou, however, decided that the remarkably good banknote should not be forgotten, and so was transferred into the heaviest gold medal in the Czech Republic.

Two artists were involved in the preparation of this monumental artrwork tribute to Oldřich Kulhánek, who left us four years ago. His daughter MgA. Klára Melichová - a graphic designer, composed both sides of the medal. The academic sculptor and experienced medalist Vladimír Oppl, the author of the 20 CZK coins, prepared the embossed medal draft for this mintage. The obverse side of the medal was inspired by the obverse of the banknote - it bears a bust of a crowned king along with his name PŘEMYSL OTAKAR I. and a numeral 20. The reverse side of the medal then belongs to the Royal Crown, the Gothic ribbon and the Seal of Golden Bull of Sicily - one of the most important documents of our history, which affirmed the right of hereditary for the descendants of Ottokar on the Czech throne.

This medal is a limited edition release of only 50 pieces. An integral part of each piece is a certificate of authenticity from the State Printing House and a commemorative certificate made with cold stamping technology.
