Product description

The chronicle of the history of the Czech nation is full of unforgettable stories. Although many will try to tell you the opposite, the true Czech nature is mirrored in them. This has become the template of the new cycle of the Czech Mint called "Stories of Our History". The first ounce gold medal commemorates the tragic fate of two skiers Hanč and Vrbata, whose friendship is impressing even after 105 years.

An international cross-country race was held in North Bohemian Giant Mountains, where the best athletes took part on Easter in 1913. The Patriotic Union of czech skiers attributed him extraordinary importance because it wanted to strengthen the czech prestige in German borders region. A phenomenal skier and a multiple champion Bohumil Hanc was at the start. The morning weather was favorable, and the contestants therefore went out light-dressed. But the weather got worse soon. Hanc, who did not even know that his rivals had already given up the race, was hard on his way to the finish. But he did not arrive there in the expected time. When he was later found to be broken, nobody was able to help him. A subcooled skier died of a heart failure. To everyone's astonishment he was wearing a coat and a cap. How could it be? Only later, when another frozen body was found in the mountains, they all learned the sad truth. Exhausted Hanc encountered his best friend and sports enthusiast Vaclav Vrbata, whom he invited as a spectator. He clutched his coat and cap with his flesh, and exposed himself to frost so that his mate could finish the race. However, the victim of Hanč and Vrbata was eventually not in vain. It became an impulse to establish rescue mountain services, which took the last day of two friends for life and death into their own.

Expert medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek became the author of the commemorative medal. The obverse side of the medal is dominated by the composition evoking the cross. On the ground there are period wands, the skis are skittered in the snow and a coat and a cap are hanging on them. Composition is complemented by inscriptions BOHUMIL HANČ - VÁCLAV VRBATA - 24. 3. 1913. The reverse side is then devoted to two skiers in the shade of the snowdrift and the inscription of INTERNATIONAL SKI RACES IN KRKONOSE MOUNTAINS.

Only one hundred gold ounce medals will be created. Each of them is hand-numbered on the edge and provided with a special certificate of authenticity.
