National football had a number of excellent players throughout its history. The Czech Mint, within the series Czechoslovak football legends, dedicates magnificent Smart coins to those who are considered true jewels of our football. Among these phenomenal players definitely cannot miss unbeatable defender Jan Lala.

Jan Lala was born on 10 September  1938 in Libická Lhotka near Pardubice and his parents certainly did not know how talented their son was. However, soon he joined FC Meteor Žižkov as a defender and then as a forward FC Bohemia Karlín. Premier League was waitng for him and in 1956, Lala appeared in the shirt of Dynamo / Slavia Praha. After a year, he shortly changed the club –he worked in FC Dukla Pardubice - but in 1959 he came back under the patchwork flag  for ten years. He played in 143 league matches and put on the shirt of Slavia in 402 matches.

When he was 31 years old, he accepted the offer of foreign contract, and played two seasons for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. His career ended in the FC Spartak in Ústí nad Labem. His nimbleness, audacity and dangerous attacks on the wing made Jan Lala member of the elite of national football. This was confirmed by his performance during the World Championship in Chile in 1962, where our awesome footballers won silver. That`s why he became third in the first year of the survey Footballer of the Year and second best Czechoslovak footballer of the year 1967. He also deserves the Plaque of J. Madden.
