Stories of Our History

The Czech Mint commemorates the story of Free Europe by issuance of the seventh commemorative medal minted from a quarter-ounce of pure gold that belongs to the cycle entitled “Stories of Our History”.

Ferdinand Peroutka, the first director of the Czech broadcasting
, described the reason why the Free Europe radio station was established: “ The Prague Communist government had to say it failed on first May (1951) at eleven o'clock in the morning. It had clogged all the cracks to prevent the house from getting fresh for three years. But also to prevent the home odor of dictatorship, the strange blend of sweat and blood. But since your government has long decided not to be ashamed of anything, this second goal is not a major goal for it. The most important thing is that you have no opportunity to think other than the government. You shouldn't even get a bite of mental food that no government agent had in his mouth before. You will not receive information that the government does not like. You cannot read a book that is not approved by the Inquisitorial Commission. You will not receive news of progress in science. The world is lost to you. In addition, you are advised to repeat certain government-prescribed slogans from morning until the night. Because all of this might not be enough against the natural agility of the human spirit, the government is still chasing you to work, so that your main drive is a desire to relax and be so exhausted so that you do not want to think. We have heard so much about how a new person will be born. And so far the goal is to terrify, limit, numb and to make people tired. There are guards on the border so that nothing can penetrate here or there. In the airtight enclosure, various little men shout that it is dogma that no one can doubt. But this radio station began to speak on May 1. If nothing else, it means freedom of information. There will be no dogma again. ”

MgA. Martin Dašek
placed a portrait of Ferdinand Peroutka lighting a pipe on the reverse side of the medal. The journalist is surrounded by an inscription: VOICES OF FREE CZECHOSLOVAKIA - FERDINAND PEROUTKA - FIRST DIRECTOR RFE. The obverse side then presents a map of Central Europe - the waves of Free Europe spreading from the German city of Munich.

The schedule of issuance counts only
100 pieces supplemented by a special certificate of origin.
