Product description

The 30th Summer Olympic Games were held in London in 2012. The spectacular sporting event was not overlooked by the Royal Mint, which minted a collection of 29 commemorative coins.

London
became the first city in modern Olympic history to host the Games three times – for the first time in 1908, the second time in 1948 and the third time in 2012. Athletics, badminton, basketball, boccia, boxing, cycling, football, goalball, gymnastics, handball, sailing, equestrian, judo, canoeing, archery, modern pentathlon, field hockey, wheelchair rugby, table tennis, shooting, fencing, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, rowing, aquatics, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling - all these Olympic and Paralympic sports have been depicted by the Royal Mint on coins, the design of which emerged from a public art competition that attracted over 30,000 entries.

Each of the 29 coins presents a
scene from a different sport. The composition of the reverse sides is supplemented with the nominal value of 50 PENCE (GBP). The obverse side, which is common to all the coins, bears the necessary attributes of the issuer, including a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Each coin is set in a
collector's card. The set of cards is stored in a handy album full of interesting facts about the Olympic Games (in English). The final piece of the numismatic puzzle is a commemorative token dominated by the British flag.
