Product description

The free cycle of the Czech Mint, which is devoted to the famous sanctuaries, presents its fourth issue after the landmarks of Prague, Paris and the Vatican. The set of four gold coins pays tribute to London's Westminster Abbey.

Saint Peter appeared to a fisherman
in shore of the Thames river in 616. When a chapel was built on the site of this miracle, the history of one of Britain's most important places began to be written. King Edward III. Confessor for whom faith was more important than anything else, he built an abbey and basilica here four centuries later to redeem himself from an unfulfilled promise to make a pilgrimage to Rome. The temple dedicated to St Peter was consecrated in 1065, just a week before the king's death. To distinguish it from the older St Peter's in London, people began to call it Westminster Abbey. Edward's successor was crowned King of England here, beginning a glorious tradition - from William the Conqueror in 1066 to Elizabeth II in 1953. As well as coronations, weddings are also held at Westminster and many monarchs have been buried here. Other important people have also rested here alongside kings, such as scientists Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin or poet Geoffrey Chaucer. The famous place where the remains of the famous writer and his colleagues rest is called Poets' Corner.

The reverse sides of the four commemorative coins, which are the work of the medal maker
MgA. Tereza Eisner, commemorate different aspects of Westminster Abbey. The first coinage presents the coronation chair of King Edward, which bears the name of the founder of the Abbey. The second mintage, depicting the north front of the cathedral, celebrates the Gothic appearance of the abbey. The third mintage belongs to world-famous writers whose remains rest in the so-called Poets' Corner - alongside the statue of William Shakespeare are the names of Lord Byron, Rudyard Kipling, Lewis Carroll, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and William Blake. The fourth mintage commemorates our footprint in UK history - inspired by the memorial to Czechoslovak airmen who fought in the service of the island kingdom during the Second World War. The obverse side, which is common to the four coins, is dedicated to the west front of the cathedral. As the coins of the Czech Mint are issued with the foreign licence of the island of Niue, the obverse side still bears its necessary attributes - the national emblem, the nominal value of 10 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2022.

The set of four coins is stored in an elegant case.
