Product description

Academic sculptor Jiri Harcuba was an artist who became a legend already during his lifetime. His glass work is famous all over the world, but we know mainly his medal craft. Jubilee set of four gold mintages of the Czech Mint is being published in the year when we commemorate the 90th anniversary of the birth and the 5th anniversary of the death of Jiri Harcuba.

Jiri Harcuba's approach to the medal craft has faded away from tradition. He poured directly into the hardened gypsum disc according to his glass habit instead of modeling the clay. Harcuba's models differed from the works of his colleagues at first glance not only through work but also by style. This was economical, but brilliant. He was able to capture the motif even with a few lines. The czechoslovak circulation coin with a nominal value of 5 CZK, which was released into circulation in 1966, became the very first Harcuba´s realization. The artist had not missed a competition announced by the state bank since 1968. After the fall of the regime, the motif of Harcuba's socialist slightly modified five-crown was used to mint the five-crown of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic from 1991. Czech crowns were released into circulation when the independent Czech Republic was established in 1993, and Jiri Harcuba became designer of coins with a nominal value of 5 CZK. You have the iconic motif in your wallets until today ...

The commemorative set consists of replicas of the czechoslovak five-crown from 1966 and two Harcuba's unrealized coin designs with nominal values of 1 and 2 CZK. The replicas were created by medalmaker Petra Brodska, DiS. according to original proposals borrowed by the Czech National Bank.

The commemorative medal, with which the academic sculptor Jiri Dostal pays tribute to his mentor and friend, is the fourth coin in the set. The obverse side carries Harcuba's profile, whereas the reverse side carries motifs inspired by the five-crown and Harcuba's first commemorative coin on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation stone of the National Theater.

The set is stored in a luxurious wooden etui, whose cap is decorated with a self- portrait of Jiri Harcuba.
