Product description

Our country has been a significant one for centuries, which has often influenced the fate of the whole Europe led by many powerful rulers whose actions we still remember with respect. They usually shared their destiny with their wives standing faithfully by their side. George of Podebrady and Joanna of Rozmital are the first of the great ruling couples to whom the Czech Mint pays tribute by means of the pair of golden ducats.

George of Podebrady was elected the king of heavily rehearsed country. There were the bloody disputes between the ravaged hussites and catholics, and the European powers headed by the papal were not thrilled by the existence of the heretic hussite breed. No wonder he needed to have a strong personality at his side. He was married twice - for the first time with Kunhut of Šternberk, who died before George became a sovereign, and secondly with Joanna of Rožmitál, who had become the crowned queen at his side. Joanna was beautiful but also energetic. In difficult times she was a reliable support not only for her husband, but also for the whole kingdom that she kept safe even after George's death. She fought for his reference both on the political and the battlefield. She did not hesitate, for example, to summon the country's cash and pull her head against the enemy threatening country.

"On the common obverse side there are the faces of George of Poděbrady and Joanna of Rožmitál in great detail without any attributes, only with the names in the inscriptions. Concentration on face expression should accentuate the human dimension of the loving relationship of two people," explains the author of the entire series academic sculptor Michal Vitanovský. "There is George of Podebrady sitting on the throne on the reverse side. His character is attacked by diagonal shocks emerging from the symbol of the papacy. It is made up of a cross, a tiara and a sword completed by the year 1466, when the pope charmed the King. The composition completed with inscriptions is to recall the critical moment of the closing phase of the king's life, which was in the wake of the war, " adds the medal maker. The reverse side of the ducat devoted to the queen then presents Joanna with a book in hand and a scripture with a working monk. The scenery reminds of the prayer book the queen had made as a present for her husband, and which is a unique proof of contemporary art that was neglected because of the constant conflicts.

A set of two ducats is placed in an elegant wooden box, whose head is decorated with figures of the king and queen styled in the shape of chess figures. Each packaging includes a certificate of authenticity with the accompanying word of the author.
