Product description

Ardent collectors know the Czech National Bank’s issue plan by heart, and so they know that two new silver gems can enrich their collections in September 2015. The first is the 200CZK coin dedicated to the legacy of the great Czech patriot, designer and railway builder, Jan Perner.

Jan Perner was born on 7 September 1815 to a miller’s family. Between 1830 and 1833, he studied at the Technology College in Prague founded by the railway pioneer František Josef Gerstner. Perner joined the railway construction project in the St. Petersburg region in 1836, but he had to leave Russia early following disagreements with Gerstner’s son who managed the project. One year later, he started working on the Emperor Ferdinand Northern Railway project. Initially, he managed the construction of the railway from Břeclav to Brno, then was in charge of design work for the section from Ostrava to Auschwitz. In 1842 he designed the major Prague-Pardubice-Olomouc and Prague-Dresden railways and supervised their construction as well. The first project, more than one hundred kilometres long, was completed in August 1845. Less than a month later, Jan Perner was returning from an inspection trip and suffered a serious injury that claimed his life at the age of 30 years.

Despite his short life, Jan Perner made huge achievements and is now commemorated with a beautiful work of art – a silver coin in the exceptional high-quality (proof) of mintage. The author of the commemorative coin is the sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů whose design won the Czech National Bank competition. The jury appreciated the exceptionally harmonic compositions of both sides. On the reverse side, Fojtů made a precise portrait of Jan Perner and added the years 1815 and 2015 along the perimeter. The obverse side features an original collage dedicated to railway building - an area of activity where Perner excelled during his lifetime. The collectors’ delight in the form of a silver 200CZK coin is ready to become the pride and joy of your collections!
