Product description

The second silver coin of the new five-year cycle of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of CZK 200 in a performance standard will please all admirers of war craft. Its theme is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Königgrätz, the largest military engagement on the Czech lands.

This battle became a pivotal event of the Austro-Prussian War, which erupted in the 1866.

Austria, due to an improper organization of the army and a great misfortune, suffered a disastrous defeat, which changed the balance of power in Europe and in the end led the two warring monarchies, ironically side by side, into the First World War. Into the history entered the "miracle" Prussian rifles called the needle-guns, the courage of the Austrian artillerymen who covered the retreat of their comrades to the last man, and the humiliation of the swordmaster Ludwig von Benedek, on which was put all the blame for the Austrian fiasco.

"This is my biggest achievement in the field so far. The pursuit of an unconventional design paid off. I conceived the composition quite symbolically, instead of an excessive descriptiveness", says about his coin a young medalist from Jablonec Roman Shamilyan, which with the original rendition of the outcome of the battle secured himself the very first victory in the competition of the Czech National Bank. The Commission of the CNB for assessing the proposals for the Czech currency appreciated in particular the heraldic animals on the reverse side of the coin - the Prussian female eagle oppressing the Austrian eagle. It complements the text "Battle of Königgrätz" together with the annual dates 1866 and 2016. Also on the obverse side, which continues with a minimalist style of the reverse, is the Prussia expanding at the expense of defeated Austria.
