Product description

The last silver 200 CZK coin issued by the Czech National Bank in 2017 is dedicated to the century of the czech astronomical society. It was embossed in an exceptional quality proof.

The Czech Astronomical Society was officially founded on December 8, 1917 at the Czech Technical University in Prague thanks to the untiring activity of enthusiasts who tried to bring their love for the heavens closer to the public. It supported the observation of celestial bodies, encouraged the construction of a number of folk observatories. Its members popularized astronomy through lectures, books, magazines, and later radio. General Milan Rastislav Štefánik, one of the founders of the young state, was originally astronomer, which enabled flourishing of domestic astronomy after establishing of independent Czechoslovakia. Branches of the Czechoslovak Astronomical Society were established in Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia, Slovakia, but also in Subcarpathian Russia. The interest in space increased further in the second half of the 20th century mainly due to the development of astronautics. It is a link between professional and amateur astronomers and brings the latest scientific knowledge to the public even 100 years since its founding,

MgA. Josef Oplištil, medal maker and teacher at Jablonec medal school, became the author of the silver coin. The Czech National Bank's commission was addressed by its "very effective positive and negative representation of the Czech lion, whose negative image is composed of the constellation of the Lion". The reverse side of the coin is then dominated by logo of the Czech Astronomical Society stylized in the form of a star around which the planet is circling.

The 200 CZK coin was embossed like all other czech coins in the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.
