The National Museum boasts of millions of unique exhibits from a wide range of disciplines including natural and social science. The history of czech numismatics is also associated with it. Therefore it is convenient that 200 CZK silver coin of the Czech National Bank in standard quality is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of its foundation.

Patriotic conscious czech nobility led by the world-renowned paleontologist Kaspar Maria by the Count of Sternberk contributed to the establishment of the National Museum and called all czech patriots and supporters of science to build museum collections. The nobles laid down their words by acts. They devoted their extensive private collections to the new museum and provided their palaces for their exposure. However, they soon became small for museum funds, and therefore a completely new building was opened in 1891 on Wenceslas Square, which is still connected with our most important museum institution.

Not only the historic neo-renaissance building, but also the modern building of the National Museum, which served in the past as the Prague Stock Exchange, the parliament and seat of Radio Free Europe) is dominant on the reverse side of the commemorative coin made by Mgr. Petr Horak. The medalmaker dedicated the obverse side to selected exhibits from the extensive collections of the museum, which are the fin whale, the fossil of the trilobite, the stone plastics of the Celt head from Msecke Zehrovice, the thylacinus, the Cape Verde giant skink and the denarius of Prince Boleslaus II. The coin field is then filled with the names of objects administrated by the National Museum.
