Product description

Three centuries have passed in 2018 since the death of a renowned Baroque sculptor Jan Brokoff. The Czech National Bank issued a silver commemorative coin in quality standard with a nominal value of 200 CZK in order to commemorate the round jubilee.

Jan Brokoff came from a German family living in Hungary in Slovak Spišská Sobota, however he wanted to live in Czech lands especially in the capital city.  Although he was raised in the Protestant family, he decided to convert to the Catholic faith during his work in Prague probably in order to be able to work freely in a metropolis that did not support the Lutherans at that time. However, the work on the sculpture of the famous confessor John of Nepomuk, who guarded the secret of his queen even at the cost of his own life, could also play the role in his religious conversion. The bronze sculpture was placed on the Charles Bridge (near the place where John of Nepomuk was threw down the Vltava river) in 1683, which was long before the official canonization of the medieval martyr in 1729. It became almost binding saint´s depiction that served as a model for sculptors and painters not only in our country, but across Europe.

A medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS., who won the Czech National Bank's art contest, placed the statue of St. John Nepomuk on the pedestal on the obverse side of the coin and complemented the saint´s halo with the necessary inscription CZECH REPUBLIC. On the reverse side that imitates the obverse side, there is a vertical text JAN BROKOFF, which is complemented by a historic decoration with baroque details and years 1718 and 2018.
