Product description

A battle took place near the Ukrainian town Zborov in 1917. A legend of Czechoslovak legionaries began to be written there and the world recognized that it deserved an independent state for the first time. 100 years later they also earned their own silver memorial coin from the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 500 CZK in proof quality.

The Czechoslovak Brigade, operating on the Eastern Front, was considered by Russian rulers as second-class. It had only obsolete equipment - for example, it had almost no machine guns that became synonymous with the Great War. Its clothes were also inadequate - some soldiers had to wear winter uniforms during the hot summer. Moreover, a unit of three and a half thousand volunteers did not have the opportunity to train - its members were not used to fighting as a whole, because most of them were still scattered among Russian troops where they served as more or less independent front spies. When the Czechoslovaks were deployed in the attack at Zborov, their role should have been only supportive. However, the failure of the main Russian divisions placed them in the heart of the events. At that time, their dedication and flamboyant patriotism was fully demonstrated. They managed to break through the defensive zones of the enemy and control the battlefield. Their ineffectiveness and exploring experience helped them during the victory over the Austrian troops. Unlike traditional war tactics, they moved ahead in small squads and the initiative of the lower commanders responded flexibly to the changing situation.

Asamat Baltaev, DiS., the young medal maker,  won the CNB art competition. The reverse side of the coin devoted to a monumental warfare scene on which two armies confront. The fact is that the Czechoslovaks stood on both sides of the battlefield. The scene is complemented by the years 1917-2017 and the inscription BATTLE AT ZBOROV. The czech lion, accompanied by other heraldic features, the Austrian eagle, and inscription 500 CZK CZECH REPUBLIC closes the composition.

All CNB coins are minted by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou!
