Series: Smart coins Endangered Nature

In the collector series Endangered Nature we present on silver Smart coins plants and animals recorded on red lists of endangered species. We particularly focus on species that can also be encountered in the Czech Republic or, time to time, at our neighbours.
The European otter (Lutra lutra) is a large weasel-like carnivorous animal well-equipped for its aquatic habitat. It has short legs with webs and it uses its sensitive tactile whiskers for diving in muddy water. Otters have a dense short brown and cream fur. They are spread across Europe; in the Czech Republic they can be spotted in South Bohemia in the Šumava Mountains and in Czech-Moravian Highlands. Their diet mainly consists of fish, as well as small mammals or young water birds. Although they also have their natural enemies, they are primarily endangered by man.
The obverse side of the coin features the denomination of the coin 1 dollar, the year of issue 2013, the country Niue Island and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth complemented with a motif of wild forest. The otter -- embossed and in colour -- is depicted on the reverse side.

Limited edition 500 pcs.
