On Wheels

The new cycle of commemorative coins called "On Wheels" represents the most interesting means of transport such as cars, motorcycles and trains that have been created in the territory of today's Czech Republic. The first silver coin of the Czech Mint was dedicated to the admired convertible of Skoda Felicia, which celebrates the 60th birthday in 2019.

The convertible Skoda 450 was a revelation when introduced to the visitors of the 3rd year of the Czechoslovak Engineering Exhibition in 1957. Handsome bodywork ensured the sporty design of the car. The oval mask of the radiator had a distinctive grille, the tail was long and low with a large luggage space, and the windshield with a strong chrome frame was significantly rounded to the sides. The convertible had a canvas pull-out roof, and a removable roof made of laminate was soon available. Longitudinally mounted 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 1 089 cm3 and power of 36.8 kW - 50 hp - at 5,500 rpm - was able to reach a maximum speed of 128 km / h. The car amazed not only the Exhibition Center in Brno, but also the London Motor Show a month later. The car company invited  USA Miss Charlotte Sheffield that interested the professional and lay public. Škoda 450 could be bought on the open market for CZK 42,000 without waiting for a voucher, but two-thirds of the 1010 cars went to western Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States. The interest was huge, but the car company did not manage to deliver. The car was modernized in 1959, which included mainly a new front axle with trapezoidal arms and coil springs. This, along with a number of other structural changes contributed to renaming of the model to Skoda Felicia. People around the world fell in love with the last open car of Skoda. Today we meet it on the roads and its owners are rightfully proud of it.

The reverse side of the coin made by medal maker Luboš Charvát presents Felicia with the roof down, complemented with the production years 1959 to 1964 referring to the name of the cycle - the detail of the tyre. The circumference of the obverse side bears the wheels of various means of transport. Since the coins of the Czech Mint are licensed by a foreign issuer, which is the Niue Island, the obverse side bears its essential attributes that are the portrait and the name of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD), together with the year of the issue 2019.

The coin was issued under official permission of Skoda Auto and was stored in a spectacular packaging containing accompanying text and period pictures.
