Czech Seals

The Czech Mint closes a chapter devoted to the nobility with the fourth silver medal beautified by patina from the Czech Seal cycle. It commemorates the story of Bohuslav of Svamberk.

The biography of Bohuslav of Svamberk
, the seventh man in his family, describes the complexity of the position of the Czech nobility in the second half of the 15th century. Bohuslav became after the initial sympathy with George of Poděbrady one of the founders of the Green Mountain Unity, which turned against the elected king militarily. This hostility led the nobleman into prison, but later he was released. Bohuslav as the supreme governor of the counterpart of Matthias Corvinus fighted against Vladislaus II after George's death. However, Corvinus imprisoned him in Hungary. Bohuslav of Svamberk died at home on his estate in 1490.

The reverse side of the commemorative medal bears
a portrait of Bohuslav of Svamberk, which is torn as his loyalty. One half of the portrait is supplemented by the Czech coat of arms, the other with the Hungarian coat of arms. The composition of the reverse side is completed by a circular logo of the collection, together with an inscription that shows the name and date of death of the nobleman. “The seal of the Lord of Svamberk on the obverse side of the medal is traditional in shape and simple in content. It bears an inscription made in the Gothic fracture and an ancestral coat of arms with a swan in the shield and jewel. The coat of arms is a talking coat of arms, which means that, the symbolism indicates the name of the bearer. The family was named  Švamberk after the German name of the swan Schwann, ”explains the academic sculptor and author of the medal Michal Vitanovský.

The medal was stored in a
special packaging with the accompanying word of the author.
