Latin Quotes

The silver medal of the Czech Mint "Omnia vincit amor" from the free cycle entitled Latin Quotes is an original gift to express various forms of love - from platonic affection to romantic longing.

The era of
ancient Rome is often seen today as a decadent time full of frivolous and unbridled sexual adventure. But, as the remnants of their cultural richness prove, the ancient Romans undoubtedly knew deep, true and sincere love. For example, the most famous Roman poet Publius Vergilius Maro, who lived and worked in the 1st century BC, wrote "Omnia vincit amor" - "Love conquers all" in his Bucolica. These words are spoken on his deathbed by a man named Gallus, who is so mad with unhappy love that even the gods themselves cannot help him. But there is another part of the quotation that is forgotten. In its full form it says "Amor vincit omnia, et nos cedamus amori" - "Love conquers all, so let us submit to it".

Medal maker
MgA. Petra Čánská dedicated both sides of the medal to the heart - a universal symbol of love that is understandable across time and space. On the obverse side it is supplůemented with the versatile Czech text LÁSKA NAD VŠÍM VÍTĚZÍ and on the reverse side by the Latin quote OMNIA VINCIT AMOR.

The medal is stored in a
gift box with an appendix explaining the origin of the Latin quotation in words and pictures.
