If we were to search a zodiac sign characterised by realism and rationality, which craves assurance and cannot imagine living without rules, we would certainly end the search with the Virgo. People born at the end of August and in September excel at diligence and often even extreme orderliness. These late summer children are in for the latest silver medal issue as part of the highly successful Old-Town Astronomical Clock series by Czech Mint.
This series of twelve magical medals rendered in the exceptional high-quality (proof) focuses on the various zodiac signs and features the picturesque scenes from the calendar plate of the Old Town Astronomical Clock. It was authored by the major Czech painter, Josef Mánes, who completed it in 1865. We can currently admire the original plate in the City of Prague Museum while a successful replica made by Jan Kryštof Liška adorns the majestic building.
Josef Mánes was inspired by the simple rural life and he dedicated the image of crop threshers on the backdrop of Kunětická Mountain to August. This theme, along with Mánes’s impressive rendition of the Sun’s Virgo sign and the tasteful AUGUST and VIRGO inscriptions make up the composition of the pure silver medal’s obverse side. The design was created by the sculptress Daniela Kartáková who also created the original reverse side common to the entire series. It features a portrait of Josef Mánes in front of the famous astronomical plate and completed with the circular JOSEF MÁNES and PRAGUE ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK inscription. A lovely birthday present as well as a less ordinary collector item – this is the new issue in the Czech Mint series.
