This series of sterling silver one kilo investment medals by the Czech Mint is dedicated to the statutory towns, the most important settlements in the Czech Republic. Therefore, it was due time that Brno, one of our oldest and most important metropolises appeared.

Indeed, the first signs of settlement in this area date back to the Stone Age. Our Slavic ancestors arrived as early as the fifth century after Christ and later became an integral part of the Great Moravian Empire. Thanks to Kosmas for the first written mention, who in his chronicle recounts how King Vratislav I. invaded Moravia with his troops and besieged Brno.

Brno gained its municipal rights in 1243 and at that time was also founded a renowned Špilberk castle, which still dominates Brno. The fundamentals of another glorious building - the late Gothic St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral, which forms an unmistakable panorama of the Moravian metropolis - go back even further to the twelfth century.

Although the residents of Brno are very proud of these two sites, many of them wished to see another architectural gem on the silver investment medal, something, that would look more fresh.

Therefore, the medaillist Irena Hradecká, DiS., has chosen the object of the Old Town Hall as the central theme. It can equal with its competitors - the beginning of its construction dates back to the thirteenth century and as the seat of city power was used until 1935 and is connected with many beautiful legends. The talented artist displayed the cultural landmark with all the trimmings, including the stone portal with five pinnacles and the town hall tower with a a Renaissance helmet. Jakub Matouš, DiS., has then prepared an incredibly detailed view of the city center from the air for the medal. Jan Petr, DiS. has combined skilfully both artistic elements on the obverse side of the medal. The reverse of the medal, which is common to all the mintages of the cycle, bears a map of Czech Republic with marked statutory towns and was designed by MgA. Miroslav Schovanec, DiS.

Besides the impressive weight, can the silver investment medal also boasts an extremely limited number of the emission load of 24 pieces.
