1/2 ounce gold medal Opening of Prague Music Academy proof

The school was founded in 1808 to provide education to orchestral musicians. The primary impetus for the school's founding was a proclamation by music-loving Prague aristocrats in 1808, where they expressed their will to found such an institution. It is now considered the founding charter of the Prague Conservatory. The Prague Conservatory ranks among the oldest music schools of this type in Europe. Soon after the charter was published an organization called “Society for improving music in the Czech lands" began collecting the first financial contributions and the number of supporters was growing. The first school year of this exceptional institution began on 24th of April 1811. During the following period the school played a significant role in the development of Prague and Czech musical life. It also enhanced the musical awareness of the Czech people during its 200 years of existence, despite all the obstacles and problems it encountered.

In the beginning teachers’ flats served as classrooms; later on the school operated in the Dominican monastery, Rudolfinum, the Benedictine monastery and the Chemical Institute until it eventually obtained during the first Czechoslovak Republic its own building in the street Na Rejdišti in the Prague Old Town, where it has resided until this day. The most prominent musicians from the whole Europe were educated, or taught, at the Prague Conservatory.

As the main motif of the medal, its author, sculptor Luboš Charvát, chose the historical building of the Conservatory situated in the Old Town. He depicted the building in an untraditional way - on the obverse side of the medal music staves arranged in perspective in lines create shape of the school’s building. In the centre of the medal, the staves are complemented by music marks. In the lower part of the medal, text arranged in lines reads: “Zahájení výuky na pražské konzervatoři 1811–2011” (Beginning of lessons at the Prague Conservatory 1811–2011).

The motif on the reverse side complements the one on the obverse side. The staves create again the shape of the building and a musical instrument – a cello – stands out in the centre.

Limited edition: 400 pieces, numbered.
