Product description

The traditional Ducat series of the Czech Mint pays tribute to Ottokar II of Bohemia in 2023. The relief of the gold ten-ducat commemorates his final resting place.

When Ottokar II of Bohemia was defeated and captured at the Battle of Moravian Field, the enemy soldiers beat and stabbed him to death, finally splitting his skull in two with one mighty slash. The embalmed body of the Bohemian king was then displayed in public to prevent doubts if he had indeed fallen. His remains were moved many times, but neither the widow Kunhuta nor her son Wenceslaus II could provide a dignified place for them. Only Charles IV, who held the legacy of his Přemyslid ancestors in high esteem, had his great-grandfather buried in the new royal tomb in St. Vitus Cathedral. Ottokar's bones rested there under a tombstone with a statue of a knight in armour, royal robes and a crown on his head. The monument from the Parléřov smelter thus reminded us that Ottokar II was not only a great ruler, but also a warrior who personally led the heavy cavalry into battle without hesitation...

Medal maker Mgr. Petr Horák dedicated the obverse side of the ten-ducat to a faithful representation of the king's tomb from the side. The inscription states  HROBKA PŘEMYSLA OTAKARA II. The additional motif is a rosette from the Golden Crown Monastery, which the king founded. The reverse side, which is common to all four coins of the Ducat series, presents the monarch's relics. His dismembered skull, funeral crown and the Latin inscription taken from this jewel - HIC SUNT OSSA OTACARI INCLITI REGIS BOHEMIE QUINTI (here are the bones of Ottokar, the famous fifth King of Bohemia).

The gold coinage, which weighs ten times the weight of one ducat, is issued in a mintage of only 100 pieces. Its specifications are inspired by the first Republican St. Wenceslas ducats.
