Product description

The Royal Mint's commemorative coin from the UK series commemorating famous inventions pays tribute to the discoverers of insulin. 100 years have passed since the groundbreaking event.

A diagnosis of diabetes was a death sentence until the early twentieth century. However, in fact, the life expectancy of sufferers often did not exceed one year. But in 1921, hope dawned, thanks to the tireless pioneering work of John Macleod, Frederick Banting, Charles Best and James Collip, who succeeded in discovering the hormone insulin in animal bodies. Thanks to a substance that reduces blood sugar levels, it was possible to successfully treat a deadly disease for the first time in human history! Millions of patients were able to start living their lives without much difficulty...

The reverse side of the coin, which is the work of artist Iris De La Torre, presents an artistic representation of the molecular structure of insulin, supplemented with the text INSULIN and the corresponding chemical notation of the medicine. The obverse side of the coin is then dedicated to the attributes of the issuer - i.e. the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the text ELIZABETH II D G REG F D (Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God, Defender of the Faith), the nominal value of 50 PENCE (GBP) and the year of issue 2021.

The commemorative coin, stamped in base metal, is stored in a special packaging that recounts the groundbreaking medical discovery (in English).
