200-crown silver coin Petr Vok of Rožmberk proof

The silver two-hundred crown coin commemorates the 400th anniversary of death of the last male descendent of the Rosenberg noble family, Petr Vok.

The design of the coin – the last of the set of four 200-crown coins issued in 2011 – originated in a country-wide anonymous competition initiated by the Czech National Bank. At the recommendation of the jury, the design authored by Jaroslav Bejvl was chosen for the obverse side, and Petr Horák’s design for the reverse side.

Czech Mint has struck coins for the Czech National Bank of silver with fineness 0.925 in standard and proof qualities differentiated by the surface finish and type of edge. Proof coins, i.e. of the top quality, have a highly polished coin field, while the relief is matted and the edge is smooth. Standard coins have a reeded edge. The coins measure 31 mm in diameter, weigh 13 g and are 2.35 mm thick.

The obverse side of the 200-crown coin features the monastery in Vyšší Brod and the sepulchral emblem of Petr Vok of Rosenberg. The name of state “ČESKÁ REPUBLIKA” can be read in circumscription and the nominal value of the coin “200 Kč” is placed at the right side next to the monastery. The monastery was founded in 1259 by Vok of Rosenberg who invited Cistercian monks from the Wilhering Abbey in Austria to inhabit it. The founder of the monastery wished for it to become a family place of worship; ten generations of Rosenberg were buried here from the 13th to the 17th centuries. As a result, the church in Vyšší Brod abbey represents the most significant Czech family mausoleum.

The reverse side features portrait of Petr Vok. Text and dates at the rim of the coin read “PETR VOK Z ROŽMBERKA” 1611–2011.
