Czech 2-ducat 2011 Legend of Horymír proof

Old Bohemian legends accompany each Czech from chidhood. Tales, myths and legends are not backed by historical evidence, but they survived to the present day in folk stories and legends recorded by chroniclers Kosmas, Dalimil and Václav Hájek of Libočany, as well as in in Ancient Bohemian Legends written by renowned Czech 19th century writer Alois Jirásek. They tell stories about the oldest period of the Czech history – approximately between 6th and 10th century, up to the period of duke Bořivoj, the first documented Přemyslid ruler.

The biggest hero of the legend about Křesomysl and Horymír is a horse – the marvellous Šemík. Duke Křesomysl sentenced laird Horymír to death for inciting quarrels and fights with local silver miners. Before the execution Horymír expressed his last wish – to have a ride on his beloved horse Šemík on the Vyšehrad courtyard. To everyone’s amazement the faithful horse made a few rounds around the courtyard and then leapt over the palisades and galloped to the village of Neumětely. He paid with his own life for saving his master’s Horymír life.

The obverse side of the medal features Horymír riding Šemík in diagonal composition with inscription “Dvoudukát České republiky“and a sentence from the Ancient Bohemian Legends “Kmitli se povětřím jako pták“(They flitted in the air like a bird).

All reverse sides of the ducat series comprise motifs of five- pointed stars and three emblems of the Czech lands, but their arrangement is different on each of the ducats. The three emblems and the composition of five-pointed stars commemorate the integration of the Czech Republic in the family of European nations.

On two-ducat medal the three land emblems are arranged in the upper part of the medal, while the lower part is complemented by a circle made of five-pointed stars with 2011 in the middle.
