Czech Lion 2020
The Czech Mint introduced the investment coins entitled the Czech Lion in 2017. They joined the world's famous counterparts with great success soon. Their popularity is due to the elaborated patriotic relief, which has been reworked several times. One-ounce gold coin was minted in top quality proof for the first time in 2020.
Investment coins are usually minted in a design "standard", which means that their entire surface is matte and resistant to damage. Such coins are easy to handle and have a long lifetime period. However, the Czech Mint's investment coins are not just a financial tool - many people appreciate their artistic processing and therefore include them in their numismatic collections. For this purpose, the collector's variant of the Czech Lions in quality "proof" was created for the first time. It is characterized by a mirror-shiny surface and a matte relief. This attractive contrast effect is caused by a special modification of the tools used for embossing. In the very beginning of the "proofing" process, the surface of the stamping die is polished by special tools and diamond paste. Then the stamping die is covered with a special adhesive tape. On the parts of the relief that are to remain matte, the proof maker will carefully cut and remove the tape. They work under a microscope and apply this procedure to even the finest details. Sand of various roughness is then applied to the masked stamping die, whose exposed parts of the relief become matte. Finally, we remove the remaining tape which has retained selected parts of the relief polished. During minting, the gloss and matte are then transferred from the stamping die directly to the coin…
All variants of the Czech Mint's investment coins were reworked in 2020, but the main idea remained. In addition to the Czech lion in an untraditionally realistic presentation, the reverse side of the gold coin presents two other symbols of Czech statehood - the St. Wenceslas crown on the head of a two-tailed beast, and an eagle on a shield, which is a synthesis of St. Wenceslas, Moravian and Silesian predators. The medal maker Asamat Baltaev, DiS. became the author of the relief. The obverse side bears the necessary elements of the island of Niue, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign license to mint its own coins – i.e. the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2020 and a nominal value of 50 DOLLARS (NZD). All this is supplemented with linden branches.
The schedule of issuance counts 1000 pieces - 880 pieces are stored in a protective capsule (another 120 pieces are stored in a numbered collector's packaging). The capsule prevents the access of unwanted external influences, because even the slightest touch can degrade a coin embossed in quality proof …
