Product description

The Czech Republic is rich in unique objects in a wide variety of technical areas - the reason is well- known skillfulness and ingenuity of our nation. These skills are also reflected in the architecture and due to them we can also boast of the longest arch bridge, with an upper deck without connecting rods, in the world. Majestic structure of Žďákov Bridge spans the surface of the Orlík dam not far from Orlík nad Vltavou. It constitutes a significant architectural feature of cetral part of the region Povltaví and recently also decorates beautiful gold coin 5000 CZK issued by the Czech National Bank. Žďákov bridge is the penultimate mintage of the exceptionally successful series of gold coins, which between 2011 and 2015 represents ten distinctive bridges of the Czech and Moravian regions.

Žďákov Bridge, shortly after its completion, received fully deserved nickname technological wonder of the world. In those days it was the largest single arch steel bridge. Its construction begun in 1957 simultaneously with the construction of the dam of the Orlík dam and continued until 1965. At that time, the bridge could boast about unprecedented parameters – it is 542.91 meters long. Span of the main arch between the pillars is 379.6 metres, and it supports the construction, under  which is a two-lane road at an impressive height 50 m above the lake and 100 m above the bottom of the river Moldau. Although the weight of the arc is 3100 tons and the weight of all the steel used 4 116 tons, the structure has very light touch. Authorship of that extraordinary project was attributed to Pragoprojekt and Metallurgical Project Prague. The construction was realized by the company Metallurgical assemblies Ostrava-Vítkovice.

Quite a number of talented artists, presenting very successful compositions participated in a competition for the new look of gold coinented artists. However, the consultative committee gave the prize and the recommendations for the realization of the design to an excellent medalist Luboš Charvát. He convinced the committee with his monumental representation of the joints of bridge  construction and realistically represented details. Also his clear representation of the arch of the arch of the bridge and the harmony of both sides were appreciated. The obverse side of the coin bears the inscription "CZECH REPUBLIC" and "BRIDGES", the denomination "5000 CZK" and a composition of three symbols of the Czech lands. Inscriptions "ŽĎÁKOV ARCH BRIDGE" and "2015" are added to the reverse side of the coin. This gold coin is an exceptionally high-quality work of art, which elegant design will bring the light to your precious collection.
