Product description

Gold coins of the Czech National Bank with a nominal value of 10,000 CZK commemorate the most important state anniversaries. In 2021, the gold coins minted in quality standard are dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Ludmila.

Although
Ludmila is the first Czech woman whose name has been historically documented, we draw information about her life mainly from legends. As the daughter of the vlady of Pšov, she married Přemyslid prince Bořivoj I. On a visit to his son-in-law, the Great Moravian prince Svatopluk, he met Methodius, and was so captivated by his faith that he was immediately baptised. Together with Bořivoj, Princess Ludmila was also baptized. She quickly forgot that she had grown up in a pagan environment and was accustomed to sacrificing to Slavic gods, but she quickly gave herself over to Christian principles. In an effort to draw closer to Christ, she became a mother of the poor, a light to the blind people, and a helper to widows and orphans. In all her care for the needy, however, she did not neglect the family hearth and gave birth to six children. One of the sons of Bořivoj and Ludmila was Prince Vratislav, an able ruler who was the first to expand beyond the borders of the Bohemian basin. Vratislav married the pagan Drahomíra, who accepted Christianity, but did not abound in love for her neighbours. She also did not love her mother-in-law Ludmila, whom she had strangled after Vratislav's death. She wanted to gain undisturbed rule over the country and absolute influence over the upbringing of her sons. These sons were named Wenceslas and Boleslaus, and their legendary fratricidal feud, which made one a saint and the other the creator of a strong Czech state, laid the foundations of Czech statehood. Wenceslas, who held his grandmother in the highest esteem, began to build her cult after her death and she was declared a saint soon...

In the art competition of the Czech National Bank,
the academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů won. The expert jury was impressed by "the perfectly rendered scene of the strangulation of Princess Ludmila from Velislav's Bible on the cheek and the very good portrait of the princess with a veil and a princely crown on the reverse side".
