Product description

The third gold coin with a nominal value of 5000 CZK from the five-year cycle of the Czech National Bank, which is dedicated to the urban conservation areas of the Czech Republic, presents the beauty of Mikulov. The mintage stands out for its top-quality proof.

South Moravia
has an extremely rich history - it guards the secrets of mammoth hunters, ancient Celts and Roman legionaries, who, according to legend, started growing grapes here. The first written mention of a settlement called Mikulov dates back to 1173. The centre of the estate, which was administered first by the Liechtenstein family and then by the Dietrichstein family, was located close to the Moravian-Austrian border, and thanks to this geographical location, various cultural and religious currents met here over the centuries. In addition to the Czechs and Germans, the Jewish community flourished here and was one of the strongest in Moravia. Although the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque buildings were frequent victims of devastating fires, the area was declared an urban conservation area in 1982. It is also valuable in terms of landscape, thanks to its location among the white limestone hills.

The academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojt
ů won the art competition of the Czech National Bank. On the reverse side of the coin he placed an elaborated collage of the dominant features of Mikulov Square,  including the Dietrichstein Tomb, the Upper Synagogue and the distinctive sgraffito burgher house “U rytířů“ with its corner quadrilateral bay window. The obverse side presents Mikulov Castle and the statue of Pomona, which is part of the medieval fountain in the square.

You can store your collection of gold coins from the ten-piece cycle of the Czech National Bank in a wooden
collector's case that you can also find in the offer of the Czech Mint.
