The merits of Emperor and King Charles IV. for the successful development of the Czech  countries are indisputable and should be a valuable inspiration to all who are and will be at the forefront of our nation. The spectacular deeds of this wise ruler will be paid special attention in 2016, as it will be exactly seven centuries since his the birth. The Czech Mint has prepared a surprise for the lovers of the mintages with the historical themes, to mark the special jubilee - a collectible Smart coin 5 NZD of pure gold with the motif of the Hunger Wall.

The Hunger Wall was built between 1360-1362 from cretaceous marl quarried directly at the construction site on Petřín hill. The Czech King and Emperor Charles IV. had it build for a strategic reasons, in order to strengthen the fortifications of the Prague Castle and today’s Lesser Town against attacks from the south and west. An interesting dominant of Prague stretches from Újezd to Petřín Hill through mountainside across the Strahov and farther to Hradčany. Originally, it was about 4.5 meters tall and 1.8 meters wide. Parts of the Hunger Wall were walkways for moving patrols, escape routes and several outpost towers, called bastions. One of them is now the basis for the main dome of the of the Štefánik Observatory. The legend says that Charles IV. summoned to works a starving people, for which the construction has become a source of livelihood, hence the name of the Hunger Wall or her nicknames The Grim Reaper and The Bread.

A luxurious mintage  The Hunger Wall is another jewel beautifying an attractive miniseries of 700 years of Charles IV. The reverse belongs to a historical scene from the period of origin of the wall, which is around the perimeter completed with texts CHARLES IV. and BUILDINGS and HUNGER WALL. The obverse carries a composition comprising the attributes of the eminent tastefully complemented with a gothic decor. The inscriptions then lists the nominal 5 DOLLARS and the year 2016. The authorship of both sides of the exclusive issue belongs to an excellent artist academic sculptor Michal Vitanovský.
