Product description

The new set of gold mini coins of the Czech Mint weighing one half a gram is dedicated to patrons - saints who intercede with superior power for us and hold a protective hand over us. St. Barbara is being introduced right after Saint Florian.

Saint Barbara is worshiped as a protector against the danger of sudden or violent death. She is therefore a patron of miners, gunners, bricklayers and other risky professions. She is a helper in need and protects against storm or disease. Iconography depicts her with a tower and a sword. What do these symbols mean? Barbara of Nicomedia was the only daughter of a wealthy merchant who brought her up in pagan faith. He trapped her in the tower and surrounded her with luxury to protect her from the pitfalls of the outside world, which means especially against the forbidden Christian teaching. Christianity, however, came to Barbara through one of the servants. She secretly accepted the baptism and promised to remain a virgin. When the suitor visited her one day, she announced that she was already engaged with a heavenly husband. Barbara had to escape and hid in the rock, which miraculously split in front of her. Nevertheless she became the patron of the miners). Still, she was eventually captured. Her own father denounced her to be Christian as a punishment and cut her head by sword after cruel torture. After that he was struck by lightning from the clear sky…

Talented medal maker David Kruzliak became the author of the coin dedicated to Saint Barbara as in St. Florian's case. The relief of the reverse side presents the figure of a saint holding a sword in one hand and a chalice, which is a symbol of the altar sacrament in the second. Of course, there is also an iconic tower. The czech-english inscription gives the name in Czech and English: SV. BARBORA - ST. BARBARA. The obverse side of the coin carries the necessary elements of the island of Niue, which is a foreign licensee of commemorative coins of the Czech Mint. These are the name and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of the issue 2018, together with the nominal value of 5 DOLLARS (NZD).

An attractive czech-english packaging presents Saint Barbara as a protector. The issue will become a good luck talisman but will also serve as a golden gift and an original addition to numismatic collection.
