Product description

In 2025, the traditional Ducat series of the Czech Mint pays tribute to Charles IV. The comprehensive set of four golden new issues consists of faithful replicas of the so-called Charles ducats.

In 1978 , on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the death of Charles IV, the so-called Charles ducats were created, following on from the highly successful First Republic St.Wenceslas ducats. These were the first gold coins issued in socialist Czechoslovakia since 1951. They were minted for the State Bank of Czechoslovakia by the State Mint in Kremnica, with 133 designs submitted by leading medal makers. The main reason for their creation was the income from domestic and foreign sales. While the two-ducat, five-ducat and ten-ducat were minted only in 1978, the ducat was created with the years 1978-1982. The limited mintage was set at 20,000 ducats in 1978, and 10,000 each of the two-ducat, five-ducat, ten-ducat and ducats. However, the actual numbers ended up being much lower. Indeed, the combination of an inflexible pricing policy that did not respond to fluctuations in the gold price and the subsequent regime change meant that demand was not what was expected. In 1997, the stocks of Karlovy Vary ducats, which bore the obsolete emblem of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, were officially destroyed, and even today these coins belong to the numismatic attractions... Each mintage paid tribute to a different aspect of the reign of the Father of the Fatherland:

  • Ducat of the medal maker Petr Formánek - Personality

  • Double ducat of medal maker Andrej Peter - Statehood

  • Five ducat of medal maker Zdeněk Kolářský - Education

  • Ten ducat of medal maker Zdeněk Kolářský - Architecture

The reverse sides of the individual Czech Mint ducats, which are replicas of the original Charles IV ducats, present a bust of Charles IV, the monarch sitting on the throne, the seal of Charles University and Prague landmarks. The obverse sides then bear the state emblem of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic or a value number. All replicas were made by the medal maker Mária Filová, DiS.

The four gold newly minted pieces are placed in a luxurious wooden etui supplemented with a special certificate of authenticity that tells their story. The issue run numbers only 125 complete sets.
