The half-ounce gold coin of the Czech Mint from the free cycle, which commemorates important personalities of world history, is dedicated to Ernest Hemingway. He joined the hall of greats 60 years after his death.
Ernest Hemingway was an American writer who was famous for his minimalist style - concise, objective, free of all superfluous things. Although he achieved his greatest fame as an economical short story writer, his own life would make a novel in several volumes. He enjoyed life to the full. He loved women and married four times. He liked to spend money and drink a lot - he kept a urinal from his favourite bar at home. He sought danger in all corners of the world. He volunteered for the Red Cross and was badly wounded on the Italian front during the First World War. As a reporter, he took part in the Spanish Civil War, the Sino-Japanese War and the fighting on the Western Front in World War II. He liked risky sports. He loved Spanish bullfighting, African safaris and fishing in the Caribbean. Twice he nearly died in plane crashes... Outwardly he was the prototype of a man brimming with strength, but inside he was vulnerable, and both are reflected in his immortal work. A man, whose bitter and painful experiences made him reflect on human bravery and indomitability, finally decided to commit suicide.
The author of the commemorative coin is MgA. Tereza Eisnerová. The reverse side, which is as economical as the writer's work, is dominated by a charismatic portrait of Hemingway, who is not missing his beard and thick knitted sweater. The inscription bears the full name of ERNEST M. HEMINGWAY. The obverse side is inspired by Hemingway's last and most famous work, which earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Nobel Prize in literature. The relief depicts a marlin, the giant fish with which the hero of the novel The Old Man and the Sea fought. Sea waves and Hemingway's signature complete the composition of the obverse side. As this is a coin issued with a foreign licence from the island of Niue, the obverse side bears the necessary attributes of the issuer - the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 25 DOLLARS and the year of issue 2021.
A pictorial certificate of authenticity is an integral part of the coin, which is issued in a limited edition of 200 pieces. It depicts Ernest Hemingway in the situations that inspired him to write his most famous works.
