Product description

The work of Adolf Loose - one of the fighters for simplicity and functionality in architecture – is commemorated 150 years after his birth. The proof is the half-ounce gold medal of the Czech Mint, which is part of a free cycle of the most beautiful unrealized proposals entered in the competitions of the Czech National Bank.

Adolf Loos, born in Brno
, has had problems with authorities and established conventions since childhood, which was ultimately reflected in his architectural work. While at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries people demanded decoration, Loos rejected ornaments as a useless relic that only wasted time and money - everything had to be simple and functional, nothing could prevent the full use of the work's functions. However, the fact that he did not consider architecture to be art did not mean that it should not meet aesthetic ideals. Loos saw them in the harmony, purposefulness, austere and dignified elegance of modern man, who is relieved of the burden of everything old. Although he faced sharp criticism in conservative Vienna and his works were often ridiculed, he had a number of supporters and wealthy clients, and passed his progressive views to the students of his private school. After the disintegration of Austria-Hungary, he turned more and more often to his native Czech land, where modern architecture flourished…

The artistic design proposal of the medal maker
Luboš Charvát, who received an extraordinary reward in the Czech National Bank competition, served as an artwork for the commemorative medal. The reverse side presents the famous Müller villa. The building, which can be found in Prague at Ořechovka, is the embodiment of Loos's idea of raumplan - a unique principle of spatial structuring of the floor plan, which is based on the smooth continuity and interconnection of individual parts of the house. The stylized portrait of the architect, which dominates the obverse side of the medal, is then as simple, austere and purposeful as his work.

The schedule of issuance counts only
99 pieces. Each medal is hand-numbered on the edge and supplemented with a special certificate of authenticity, which describes the life and work of Adolf Loose.
