Gold half-ounce medal Božena Němcová proof
200 years have passed since the birth of Božena Němcová in 2020. The Czech Mint minted a commemorative medal made of one half an ounce of pure gold to pay tribute to this eminent woman on this occasion.
The author working on the borderline between romanticism and realism is considered to be the greatest Czech female writer. However, Božena Němcová was much more than a master narrator and founder of modern Czech prose. She became a free-thinking promoter of emancipatory efforts, guardian of national identity and the muse of future generations of Czech artists working in various directions under various regimes. Božena Němcová was also popular for her dismal private life - relationships with men, unhappy marriage, degrading poverty, political persecution, weakened health, and eventually early death…
The academic sculptor Majka Wichnerová dedicated the obverse side of the medal to the portrait of Božena Němcová - in profile, with a fine scarf. The author's face is surrounded by the names of her most famous works (Baruška, National Stories and Legends, Divá Bára, The Grandma, The village under mountains, V zámku a podzámčí) and the annual years 1820–2020. The reverse side of the medal presents a statue of Barbara Pankel, which has been situated in Česká Skalice for 50 years. Barbara Pankel was not only the heroine of the Grandma, but it was the real name of Božena Němcová, who is depicted on the monument as a 17-year-old at the time of her wedding.
The schedule of issuance of the gold medal, which was created in cooperation with the Museum of Božena Němcová, counts only 99 pieces. Moreover, each medal is manually numbered on the edge.
