Gold investment coins Krugerrand have been struck since 1967 to boost the South African gold market. The name of the coin is a composition consisting of the name of the Boer politician and Transvaal president Paul Kruger and the South African currency – rand. The coin is considered as the first modern investment coin and with 60 million pieces struck it is by far the most liquid gold coin worldwide. Krugerrands have become the most popular investment coins globally.
The obverse side of the coin features the portrait of Paul Kruger, while the reverse side is decorated with the South African national symbol, a cavorting Springbok, the African gazelle.
