Stories of Our History

The sixth commemorative medal from the cycle Stories of Our History tells not only about admiration and love for nature, but also about finding your own roots. The story of Liberec Zoo is reflected in one troy ounce of pure gold.

The oldest zoo in the territory of the former Czechoslovakia
was going to celebrate its 100th birthday in 2019, and therefore researchers' association searched for documents relating to its creation. Instead of documents dating back to 1919, however, historians have discovered much older documents that show that the zoo should actually celebrate its 115th birthday! It was discovered that the director of the garden decided to deny its history in 1929. "Tiergarten Reichenberg" offered an interesting show already in 1904. Other species were added to varied birds, deers and various small animals after the opening of the garden. The zoo kept about 110 pieces of domestic and exotic birds and more than 130 animals from around the world even before the First World War. Attendance grew steadily and visitors from abroad were no exception. They could see birds of prey, reptiles, fish, porcupines or buffalo. The area soon expanded with winter grounds, monkey pavilion, aquariums, terrariums and cages for beasts. In addition to wolves, foxes and wild dogs, the zoo also kept bears or bomb…

Today, the zoo offers much more. Some of the rarest and most endangered species of the planet -
the Berber lion, the Somali donkey, the Bukhara Urial or the Maneless zebra thrive in Liberec and therefore appear on the commemorative medal made by MgA. Martin Dašek. Besides the depiction of rare animals and their names, the medal bears the inscription 1904 ZOO LIBEREC, together with the depiction of the oldest building of the complex from 1906 - the so-called Stork's Nest.

The schedule of issuance of gold ounce medals counts only
100 pieces. Each piece is hand-numbered on the edge and bears a special certificate of origin telling the story of the Liberec Zoo.
