Stories of Our History

The centuries-old history of Masaryk University is not only a story of desire for education but also of the sacrifices our ancestors laid upon the altar of knowledge. The fourth commemorative medal from the cycle of the Czech Mint "Stories of Our History" embossed of one ounce of pure gold pays tribute to them.

The second Czech university was founded shortly after the Foundation of Czechoslovakia as a result of tens of years of patriots efforts headed by professor T. G. Masaryk from Charles University. He understood that our higher education can not rely on a single institution, and that knowledge needs rivals for its prosperity. The university, which was named according to him, quickly seized the opportunity and celebrated the so-called Brno Law School and studies of slavonic, mathematics or pathology. However, Brno University did not expect easy times. Heavy casualties have been caused by the Nazi occupation, which required not only its closing, but also the lives of a quarter of the professors of faculty of science. Other suffers were made by Communist power. For political reasons, the university was renamed to the University of Jan Evangelista Purkyne, and almost half of the students had to leave the law faculty that was later completely abolished. Fortunately, the restoration of freedom enabled the university to return to its original title and ideals after 1989. Masaryk University is one of the most important educational and scientific institutions even one hundred years after its founding not only in our country but throughout Europe.

The obverse side of the medal was dedicated to the history of the university. It presents the busts of its founder T.G. Masaryk and the first rector Karel Englis and the date of foundation on January 28, 1919. The reverse side represents the presence. Over the silhouette of the Moravian metropolis there are the names of all nine contemporary faculties  immortalized in a balanced composition.
