Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
In the Middle Ages at Christmas, children were given red apples as a symbol of health, young maidens were given pearls as a symbol of purity, and the traditional gift was also a coin made of precious metal. If the recipient did not let it leave their hand all evening, they were rewarded with the promise of a rich life.
While we indulge in fancy snacks, champagne and other treats on December 31, our ancestors on New Year's Eve used to eat plain lentils, which symbolised wealth. Because they believed that the New Year's Day determines the course of the entire year, they kept a coin in their pocket on January 1 to hold onto their money.
